Re: Ferns

The posting below reminded me of a question I had. Earlier this year
there were some postings about letting stuff grow on the outside of pots.
I thought that the general consensus was to just let stuff grow on the
outside of the pots, so I ignored the white buildup on the outside of a
big pot of Martha Washington geraniums that I had been starting from
cuttings. But the plants started looking like they were damping off
(they'd been in the pot since last fall). The outside of the pot was
white. I hadn't done anyhing about it, thinking that it was a mold.
Anyhow, as the plants began to look worse and worse I decided to scrub the
stuff off. I don't know what's going to happen, but I am now down to one
start. I also put it outside (in a shaded area) this last weekend when it
was so nice. The remaining start looks pretty healthy right now.

My question is this. If it's nice mellowing mold is it green? If it's
white is it salts? What can you tell me?
