[INDOOR-GARDENING:288] Re: terraniums and carniverous plants

I'll contribute my two cents' worth:
Yes, both butterworts (Pingicula) and sundews (Drosera) will catch gnats.
Unfortunately, they won't catch all, and so you may have a population
growing in moist organic soils, but they will catch many.
Many Pings and Drosera need a cool-cold rest. The venus fly trap (VFT) does
also. This generally means temps at night of below 50F, perhaps down into
the 30s. Pings and Drosera that need the rest will make a different type of
leaf prior to resting, and on emerging from the rest, will start the
carnivorous leaves again.
There are both Pings and Drosera that don't need rest conditions. D. adelae
and D. capensis come to mind here.
In general, soil is a mixture of sphagnum peat and sand. In a terrarium, a
lower strata of charcoal and sand or gravel might be a good idea. The
plants like water, some more, some less. I grow mine in pots, in trays of
water. Unless your tap water has a very low level of dissolved solids, use
demineralized, distilled, or reverse-osmosis water.
Many species like bright light, but not all. Ask your supplier - if they
don't know, buy somewhere else.
Visit California Carnivore's web site for some extra information. I don't
have a URL handy, but any web search engine will turn up the info.
