Christa - I'm sending your shef my regards and hopes that he/she will soon be 
doing better.  I'm in Zone 9 and have left my shef in the ground thru 
winter.....it too lost all of it's leaves.  I simple gave it some 
time...watered more sparely since it did not have leaves and provided it with 
a diluted (1/4 strength) foliage pro fert.  Now it looks great.  I'm about 5 
weeks into my Spring.  Just give it time....he should be better than ever.  I 
believe the key is not to overwater while there is a shortage of clothing 
(leaves)
