It seems that my scheffeleria (s) survive on benevelant neglect: watering 
once every week or so when the leaves are looking a little droopy, no special 
humidity, bright living room and kitchen but no direct sun, in the summer on 
the shaded part of the porch, and lots of admiration.  This is a large leafed 
sheffie, one to a pot and over 6 feet tall.  Friends who have bushy sheffies 
say they do much better in bright light (just a little direct sun).  Hang in
