Re: metal halide/sodium lights
What a coincidence...just today my husband hung the metal halide
light system that I bought for my basement last spring. I got the
400 W unit and it does, indeed, give excellent light in a 6x6 or
so area. My light meter reads 3000-4000 foot candles when the
unit is 8-12 inches above the plants and 1200 or so when the unit
is 3 feet or so above the plants.
I suspect that I will be leery about having the unit too close
until I see how the temperature works. I also may put my
phalenopsis plants under a more ordinary florescent light
since I think that the metal halide may be more light than
they want.
I am hoping that I'll be able to grow some flowers and herbs
indoors during the winter (freesias and ranunculas for cutting,
basil and rosemary for eating). If anyone has favorites that
do well in a basement situation, I'd love to hear about them.
