Dear Linda Praul and everyone,
I just read an article on peace lillies (Spathyphyllum spp.). It
was in the Summer, 1978 issue of Pacific Horticulture. The author was very
satisfied with the ones he had, and gave detailed cultural instructions.
The author is Harland J. Hand, and here is part of the article (article's
title: Spathyphyllum 'Clevelandii'; but it is about all of the various
members of the genus). Here is an excerpt:
"The pots containing my plants sit in troughs of water that are
refilled to a depty of about two inches just as soon as they start fo get
dry. Spathyphyllum 'Clevandii' is ont of the few houseplants that
actually thrives with its feet constantly in water".
"If allowed to get too dry, or to be slightly dry for too long a
time, the tips of the leaves turn brown and it may be years before they
are completely replaced. Dry air may also brown the tips of the leaves,
but evaporation from water in the troughs prevents this damage".
Could this be a factor in your plant's frustrating problem?
By the way, the author was growing his peace lily indoors in El
Cerrito, CA, which is near Berkeley.
