Hi Lori,
I sympathise with your problem, my 400+ cactii suffered badly
from Mealy Bug this year, and I have to be careful with insecticides as the
cats and the dogs all roam at will in the sun lounge. The wretched things
(bugs, not 4-legged pests!) then spread to my other plants, nearly a
disaster as they all grow pretty close together.
This is how I tried to zap them...Instead of spraying, try drenching
the plants with a systemic insecticide - as the bugs suck the sap, they
will ingest the insecticide as well. You can also attack them with cotton
buds soaked in Methylated spirits. Or try a soft soap spray - once their
waxy coating has been destroyed, it is easier to kill them.
I would dearly love to declare my sun lounge a mealybug free zone, but
it hasn't happened yet, the best I seem to be able to do is to keep the
pesky things under control, and make sure my plants are really healthy to
withstand an attack.
Good luck.
Liz - in a wet and windy Scotland.
