outdoor cat problems

A little off topic, but here's some suggestions:

There is a motion-detector device that waters anything that moves. Works wonders for cats and other pests, but quite expensive ($150 Cdn). If anyone is interested, I'll search my magazines for the mail-order address.

Anything unpleasant to walk on - prickly clippings from rose bushes work great. So does the deadwood you cut away from your blackberries. Think sharp and twiggy and use it as ground cover.

A neighbor told me to put toothpicks around - break off pieces and put them far enough into the soil that they stay upright. I guess she ran out of rose canes.

Anything "stinky". Supposedly cats hate citris scents, garlic/onion scents, and pepper scents. My friend makes a nasty coctail in her blender, adds water, and waters the perimiter of her garden. Another friend buys chili powder in bulk and sprinkles it around. I have found limited success with garlic powder.

Hose down any cat you see. One friend even hosed down a contankerous neighbor, but I don't recommend that!

Many farmers in my parents area use electric fences. But my husband won't let me put a bear pit in my sub-urban yard!

My own cats are allowed out on leashes, and I keep them out of the gardens. This makes some cats stay outside their perimiter, and some cats come and challange it, so plants just don't grown in certain places that are preferred for marking.
