two questions

Hello from a lurker. I have two questions:
1. I have a birds nest fern that's several years old. It was outgrowing
space available to it and had developed a "neck" like an African Violet, so
last spring I pulled off old leaves and replanted it more deeply than it had
been growing. It thrived in a shady spot outdoors, and I brought in a very
attractive plant this fall. Yesterday our small pony disguised as a dog
decided that fern was just what she wanted for a snack, and she snapped the
plant off at soil level. Now, will a new plant come from the roots that
remain in the soil? Can I salvage the birds nest? I have stuck the "nest"
with the foliage that's left on it into a pot with some soil. Will it root?
Should I put the pot in a plastic bag to help with humidity?
2. I'm going to be in the Twin Cities next weekend. If there are any places
to buy interesting houseplants here in Cedar Rapids I haven't found them. I'm
wondering if anyone from the Minneapolis area can point me in the direction of
indoor gardening shops. I know I've seen some on HGTV shows, but have never
written down their names. Thanks in advance.
