Hi Liila:
Thanks for the compliment. I guess it comes easy for me because I had a
great teacher, my grandfather. He showed me how to garden and to graft
trees, starting when I was 5 years old. Three maples I started from seed in
1950 are still on my grandfather's place. He's long gone but my father lives
there; he's going on 88 and he, too, likes to grow things.
I was in the newspaper business for 40 years when I decided it wasn't fun
anymore (I'm not cut out for corporate politics). I decided to see if I
could get paid to garden. I took a two-year horticulture course and went to
work for a greenhouse/nursery/florist operation. I also ran a small
perennial nursery. Arthritis started creeping in four years ago and three
years ago had to retire on disability following two hip replacements. Now
I've combined both careers and am a freelance writer/editor and a
horticulture consultant. I also teach gardening classes, including one for
people of disabilities. And I volunteer with the pastoral care department of
a local hospital, working mainly with people in the rehabilitation unit.
Actually, I'm just as busy as I was before retirement; now I just have to
take longer to do a lot of things and avoid some things.
I don't think of myself as having a green thumb. It's more like a dirty
thumb. I enjoy getting down and dirty in the garden and in my plant room.
Thanks for writing. Greetings to all on the list.
