[INDOOR-GARDENING:157] Re: orchids/keikis

Thanks for the great explanation of keikis.

Keikis are not only new shoots, they have roots attached to them. When the
roots are long, one can detach the offshoot (just below the roots) and pot
them up making new plants. When an orchid is very prone to keikis, using high
nitrogen may get you many keikis instead of flowers. I've had four or five on
the same mother stem. So...if you want new plants, use high nitrogen; if you
want flowers, use high phosphorus. Not all orchids produce keikis. My
experience is that certain dendrobium and epidendrum produce keikis;
phalenopsis, paphs do not. Batya Levin, Bronx, NY
