I have always loved asparagus ferns and have about 15. I place them among the
other plants for a light airy look (especially good with orchids and on the
edge of tables, benches where their fronds hang down).
I have found they will tolerate almost all light, although they do not seem
to like full sun and if moved too quickly into a sunny spot, the leaves will
bleach white so I try to avoid this. Move them slowly from one light
condition to another. In the summer, I hang them on trees outdoors.
I have occassionally had them turn yellow/brown and lose leaves. They are
the dickens to clean up. If a frond loses all its leaves, I cut these fronds
down to an inch and usually the plant gets new growth. I think this comes
from watering too infrequently. I water about twice a week. And the humidity
is medium to high. They do well in a cache pot with a little extra water that
they can drink when thirsty. Especially in an apartment where the heat cannot
be regulated.
When they need repotting and I like the size of the pot they're in, I slice
them down the middle, top to bottom, with a sharp knife and pot up each
half. I also cut off some of the lower bulbs so I can put dirt at the bottom
of the pot. I may lose a few fronds, but the plant usually recovers and goes
on nicely. Pf you don'[t do this, pot them up (a size) when the bulbous
tubers (I think) fill the pot.
They also appreciate fertilizer (Schultz 10-15-10 is fine) from time to time.
Enjoy them, when mature, they're beautiful. Batya Levin, Bronx, NY
