Lots of possibilites - maybe the flower bud was injured (frozen) along the
way. Buds are more fragile than leaves. Maybe the plant was not properly
treated by it's grower, one plant can always be on the outside looking in.
Considering that most fall and winter sold amaryllis perform well, you may
have purachased the lemon.

I would probably try to ripen the foliage as usualy and expect a bloom next
year. If you have misgivings about the plant you could replace it, the
expense is not great.

On the subject of amaryllis the bulb catalogs offer an dwarf plant that I mean
to try next fall. The thirty inch stalks are hard to manage and lean needing
a brace.

There are quite a few fall and winter flowering bulbs for the north.
Veltheima is a super plant with attractive foliage. Ornithogallium dubium has
a blosom that lasts for months.

Glasshouse Works and Squaw Mountain are two terrific indoor plant catalogs.
Both are online.
