Cami, I had a large hoya in a wooden tub that was winter=killed a few
years ago, but one piece that hung over the side of the tub had taken
root in the ground.  I trained it on a trellis, and it is blooming this
year, so you see they don't HAVE to be root-bound  I've been feeding it
with 10-60-10 fertilizer and it's grown a lot.  Good luck with yours.
