Hi everyone!
I'm finally taking the opportunity to introduce myself to the list and
tell you all that I've been thoroughly enjoying your correspondence
over the past few months. I applaud the way you all share your
knowledge, experience, and love of indoor plants with each other. Very
cool!
I'm 31, live with my awesome dog, race in triathlon, volunteer for a
number of AIDS service organizations, and work in Training &
Organization Development for a large marketing/promotions agency. I
live in a rather small studio apartment in Chicago with not an inch of
outdoor gardening space and very un-user friendly windows, hence my fun
with indoor plants, especially this summer. I've had a good deal of
success with what most people would consider outdoor plants: Impatiens
(including New Guinea), Marigolds, Petunias, and Periwinkles. I've also
been enjoying African Violets, Fan Palms, and a decent variety of other
typical houseplants.
My windows face East and West and half of the time, they are
obstructed from full sun. I keep all of the plants on humidifying
trays and they really seem to love it.
Crokett is my bible because he has a great "you can do it, as long as
you do this" attitude, even for higher-maintenance plants. He just
lets you know about the challenges...as opposed to a few other books
I've looked through that hit you with "you'll never be able to do it,
it's too difficult, but if you could do it, here's how you would"
attitude.
If you'd like to respond on something less than a global issue, please
feel free to email me directly: Steve_Young@Frankel.com
Thanks and happy planting,
Steve

I think you would have trouble providing enough light for the New Guinea
types but the others do very well on a windowsill or under lights.
