Gloxinia (was: Stuff)

Dear Lauren,
If you want your Gloxinia to look like the compact rosettes of leaves
topped by multitudinous blooms like store bought plants the answer is
simple: More Light! Unlike African Violets, Glox's need sun. 3,000
footcandles which is very bright light supplied for 8 - 10 hours will keep
them compact. You could try a lower amount of light for more hours but
don't exceed 16 hours of light in any one 24 hour period.

Even a south window has trouble supplying that kind of light consistently
which is why serious growers put their glox's under flourescent light.
Four tubes will get you around 1500 footcandles, this is on the low side
but the day in day out consistency over time will compensate. Six tubes is
better but there are no six tube fixtures commercially available.

Full sun in my south window is over 5,000 f.c. but with the sun so high
in the sky in summer, this light is only available right up against the
glass. Even a few inches inside and the light level drops to less than
half. I suspect your condidtions are similar and this is why your gloxinia
resemble miniature trailing vines.

H.
