Scale & Sticky Sap?

About a year ago, several on this list recommended that I use an oil spray to get rid of a scale investation on some ivy topiaries and it worked great!  (And I just used plain old Pam, since I had it handy; though I might use a spray designated for it next time, since the Pam didn't smell so good after awhile. . .)

Question:  I've started seeing lots of sticky sap all over the ivies, though I haven't yet seen any signs of scale. Is this likely a sign that it's come back, or might I be on the lookout for some other invader?
