My method for large planters that provide irristable digging opportunities
is to cover the soil with pieces of slate or flat river stone. I have a
collections of fossils and other interesting rock formations that I display
by topping my flower pots with them. The plants don't seem to mind. The
rocks are also very useful as ballast if the plant tends to be top heavy in
its pot.
