Kirsten,
A suggestion for your scale from the eastern side of the Atlantic, that
involves no chemicals. If the palms are as big as you imply, I would
suggest taking them into the yard, and turning a water hose with a narrow
nozzle onto them. The jet that results is powerful enough to dislodge
the scale and, from my experience, they aren't able to climb back! I use
this treatment whenever needed on my bay tree. However, do watch out,
and DON'T use this treatment for plants with fragile leaves - they'll end
up in shreds.
