Coir

In the orchid sector, this material "coir" (aka: coconut fiber/dust peat
replacement) has been widely discussed. You can buy it in compressed
brick form & soak it to expand it to a large volume for use in potting
many kinds of plants. It's made from coconut husks.

I just thought I'd bring it up to you guys, I hadn't heard anything
about it here, and thought some of you might be interested in it.
It great because it holds large ammounts of water (like sphagnum or
peat), is lightweight, easy to store in "brick" form, and comes from a
renewable resource, without disturbing the environment.

Drawbacks are that it may hold too much water for some watering habits
or some plants. Also, I've heard that some processing techniques
introduce large ammounts of salts, so it might be wise to rinse it
several times.

But for some people, this may be a great thing.

Hope this sparks someone's interest.

Julia
