Dave,
What is the name of the granular systemic you mention? I used Marathon
this year for the first time to control aphids on my tropical hibiscus.
Worked beautifully on the aphids, but resulted in a major outbreak of red
spider mite. I have since learned that this is a common problem with this
particular systemic (it's also sold as "Merit" from another manufacturer).
I have kept the mite problem under control by frequent showers from the
hose and judicious pruning, but that may not be possible in an indoor
environment.
