Mold, mold, and more mold

Hello everyone,
I recently signed on to this list so thought I should introduce myself.
I am a grower for a local nursery, but like the rest of the world I am
forever learning how to better care for my plants. Most of my work
revolves around outdoor plants and my indoor plant experience is limited
to what I grow myself at home. My plant collection is made up mainly of
various ferns and various other tropicals and subtropicals, with a few
cacti here and there. I live just outside Seattle, Washington and have
been having quite a problem lately with mold growing on the soil and
around the base of my plants. I only moved to this soggy part of the
world last year, so am still getting used to its effects (both on me and
my plants). Without resorting to really nasty chemicals, does anyone
know some good remedies to get rid of mold (or at least keep it at bay)?
I'd appreciate any advice you had to give.

Thanks,
Kim
