Hi Shirley, I live in San Jose and had a Ficus benjamini on my north patio
(which is partly covered) for many years. It had outgrown my livingroom,
and, when it got too large for my patio, I gave it away. I think it would
have been hurt this winter. My bougainvillea looks as if it has been
killed, and my hoya has only a few green leaves left. The temperature was
in the upper twenties here several times in January and February. Very
"unusual" weather. It doesn't get that cold there, does it? Your Ficus
should be okay outside. I don't know the palm which you mentioned, but my
"parlor" palm has been in the covered corner of my patio all winter, and is
all right.
Good luck with your plants.
Vera Diehl
