Is Golden Gate park the one across from the Natural History Museum?
If so, what a gorgeous place! We visited my sister-in-law in San
Francisco last August and had a wonderful time (she lives near the
big cathedral on California Street). We spent hours walking through
those gardens and still didn't see all of it. Absolutely beautiful. I
remember the part you're talking about with the tree ferns and other
exotic plants, and it was really interesting to see the big Araucarias
(Norfolk Island Pine) grown to full size, unlike the little 2' one in my
living room. My favorite part of the gardens was the area full of
succulents, many of which were in bloom. There was also a guy there
holding his arms out for the birds to land on his arms, kooky but fun
to watch.
