Hi,

I'm the greenhouse caretaker in the biology department at Wake Forest
University (North Carolina). I'm also a novice. However, I've been
repotting lots of orchids and bromeliads lately. For the orchids, I've used
commercial orchid bark mix, which usually consists of cypress bark and
charcoal, sometimes with some perlite thrown in. From what I understand,
tree fern fiber has become difficult to locate since orchids have become
such a popular hobby. I've found the orchid mix in the houseplant section
of a big home-improvement warehouse (here we've got Lowe's and Home Depot). HTH

Good luck,
