Once when I lived in an apartment I used to grow orchids (smaller
varieties) in a closet under fluorescents. It was a wide but shallow entry
closet with louvered folding doors and I used a small fan to keep the air
moving. In this case it was to keep the cats from munching. It did work
adequately but I doubt I could have grown anything as large as a cattleya.
Watering was definitely a problem. OTOH, no trouble keeping the humidity
up. I have an HID in the basement now and I don't think I'd try it under
such confined conditions.
