If the stake is to be long-term (more than a few weeks), use something
metal or plastic (or a longer-lasting wood, like cedar or oak but not
common pine, birch or maple, which is what most dowels are).

If the staked plant is too heavy, put the pot into a larger (terracotta)
pot. Still too heavy? Use a real big pot, fill area around the inner pot
with stones.

If your plants are subjected to a good breeze, they tend to develop
stronger stems.
