I had a similar experience with my chineese evergreen except that my new
puppy had knocked it down and the stem broke off from the root. I put the
cut plant in water also hoping for roots and continued looking after the
roots hoping for leaves. Unfortunately the roots eventually just rotted and
while the leaves of my cutting stayed green for quite some time roots never
did appear and eventually they turned yellow and died as well. Sorry for
such bad news. I hope you have more luck!
