Re: Terrariums

Hi Molly,

I highly recommend a miniature or semi-mini African violet as your
centerpiece. The mini AV probably is best.

There are also mini ferns that can be used in the center or, better yet, in
the rear. Many varieties of miniatures are available, too long to list here.
Type "miniature plants" into a search engine(s) and see what comes up. My
first recommendation is the mini AV.

There are other gesneriads (AVs are in the family) that will work but
they're a bit more tricky. These include sinningia pusilla, a very miniature
gloxinia relative that blooms almost constantly. If you want to learn more
about the fascinating gesneriads, get thee to thy computer and look up
American Gloxinia and Gesneriad Society or, even better, Gesneriad Reference
Web. It's outstanding and astounding. Another place to look is African
Violet Society of America. All these sites provide excellent growing
information, photos and lists of commercial vendors.

I especially enjoy the miniature AVs and other gesneriads because I can fit
so many more plants into a limited space whether it be on lighted shelves or
in a terrarium.

An idol? Hope I live up to that after I get the big jar planted.

Subject: Terrariums

HI everybody,

Thanks for the replies on the terrarium issue. I have not started yet and
so am not currently using anything for a container- I just knew I wanted all
glass (lid, too). I had not thought of having some cut to replace a
non-see-through lid- good idea! I did see a pumpkin-shaped jar with a glass
lid at Wal-Mart the other day; it's incredibly cute, but very small (maybe
7" x 7" x 7"). Is this too small? I don't mind doing one with just moss
and intersting stones, but what small centerpiece plant does anyone
recommend (it would has to stay very small)?

John: you are my new idol- a 2.5 foot jar? Wow!

Molly
