OK, Claire, you asked for it!
Care for streps is similar to African violets. Streps prefer temps in the
60s, need high light but not direct sunlight, humidity high enough to keep
leaves from turning brown. They also like a light mix, similar to AVs. I
fertilize each watering, using 1/4 of the recommended dosage. The fertilizer
is the same as I use for AVs. Keep away from cold drafts. Like AVs, streps
do not like very cool or cold temps. Both also do not like prolonged heat
waves, either. Mine grow between 60 and 70 degrees; I attempt to have the
temp in the low 60s at night when the lights are off. Like people, plants
need a rest period too.
My gesneriads, mostly AVs at this point but I trying others, grow in a
homemade light system (3 shelves 8 feet long, each shelf with 4
fluorescent tubes). I've already run out of room and will need to build
another light facility. The next one won't be as large, however. There's
just so many plants one can take care of!
