Thanks for your post.  We have, as I said, 3 cats (Spanky, Billie, and
Muffin), 2 dogs (Jessica and Angel), and 2 birds (Little Bird and Jake).
All are disabled in some way and all, except Jessica, were *taken in*. 
My son, *finally* at age 28, graduated from Cornell Vet School and is a
practicing veterinarian.  So explains all the creatures.  We have had
many strange and wonderful *pets* during his childhood.  

Nontheless, I found you comment interesting re cats should not be
allowed outdoors.  The only problem I would have with that is the liter
box........yuk!  My only requirement for a cat is that it (first be
neutered) and must know when to go outdoors.  Interesting.  We live in a
rural are on a dirt road (by beautiful Seneca Lake) so traffic is not a
problem re safety of animals.
