drainage holes

For my own plants, anything in a pot without drainage holes doesn't live
long. But I'm not careful with watering - I soak them all when some start
to wilt. However, I have friends that are very successful without drainage
holes. They fill the bottom of the pot with a couple inches of stones, so
if they overwater a bit they still have some drainage. They have to be
careful about not overwatering too much or the water level raises above the
stones at the bottom. Mostly their "pots" are baskets lined with plastic.
I prefer to set a regular pot inside the basket.
