Dear Vera,
In our greenhouses we grow many violets along back walls under lights. We
like for the lights to be some 6 to 8 inches above the 'TOPS' of the plants.
That of course means more than that from the bottom of the shelf. Some of our
shelves have the lights even 10 inches above the tops of the plants and the
violets bloom their heads off!
In the summer, with the heat, many variegated violets lose their variegation.
They like it cooler. Try putting them on the bottom shelf of your fluorescent
rack and see if the variegation doesn't come back.
Wishing you the best of good growing,
Jim McKinney, McKinney's Glassehouse in Wichita, Kansas
