Thanks to all for the advice. This is exactly what I wound up doing. Then
I cut the rest of that nasty stalk into 2-inch lengths, dipped the lower
part in rootone, and planted them in a wet half-and-half mixture of
vermiculite and potting soil. Then I covered them with a bag and put them
in a sunny window. The top 16 inches of this scheff was doing okay, so I
just dipped it in the hormone, and stuck it into the ground next to the
remains of the original plant. Now it looks fantastic, but I don't know
how long those leaves will stay with no roots to support them.
My next question is how long should I give those "cane cuttings" to get
enough roots to transplant? I'm wary of just opening the bag and yanking.
Sorry if I'm being dumb; I truly have no clue about this stuff.
