Hi Tom, and anyone interested in bug detection:
My mother would get up during the night and check her plants when she had
some little critter munching away on one of her prize plants. *All* plants
were prize plants to her. She always said to check the soil, each leaf,
and every stem for signs of a pest. She would hand-pick each little bug
off the plant, put them between her thumb and forefinger, and apply *firm*
pressure. As a preventative, she would go around to everyone she knew who
smoked, and ask them for their cigarette butts. These she put in an empty
gallon jar, filled it with water, and waited until the water turned a very
dark brown. Then she transferred the water to a spray bottle, and drenched
the plants. This was done outside (my brother and I had to carry, pull,
and employ the use of a wench to get some of them outside) so the liquid
wouldn't 'stink up the house.' After they dried, my brother and I...you
get the picture...would return it, or them, to their original space. The
smell went away after they dried. Mom never used a spray of any kind,
other than the cigarette water, and she she had some of the most beautiful,
lush plants I have ever seen. But then, I have known her to put a plant in
the darkest spot in the house because it looked good there, and the plant
would thrive. She even put a Rubber Tree in a room with no windows, and
the only time we could see the plant was when the light was turned on, but
that was one of the most healthy Rubber Trees I even seen. They must have
grown because they knew she loved them.
Well, that is enough of a trip down memory lane, but I hope you get the
idea.
Sorry for the long post,
Keith Davies

plants throughout my lifetime, I would have saved
my money and bought one of the smaller of the
