This is a response to an old posting on water gardens:
I have had a fish pond in a part shade section of my green house for about a
year. It was made from an old sand-play trough which I found disgarded from
a nursery school and fixed. It is about 3X4. It has two gold fish (had four
but two died early on) which are great sources of pleasure. I buy fish tank
plants which they also eat when I forget to feed them (not too often.).
These are either on metal plugs and sink or have no plugs and float.
I have elevated teh pond somewhat on two wide boards (also found) on bricks.
I put flag stones, balanced on flower pots and the edge of the pond, which
you don't see, to cover the ugly edges. On both the extension of the boards
and on the flag stone trimming I have plants of all kinds, many ferns, some
orchids. It has actually made more room in my greenhouse by adding a
"bench". Be sure you have one or two circulationg pumps to provide oxygen
(and nice sound) for the fish. Water must be added on occasion. The fish
like the cool winter night temps (55) and tolerate the summer temps (gold
fish only though).
I heartilly recommend it. Batya Levin, Bronx, NY
