The soil is very much dependant upon the type of plants you which to grow.
Utah penstemons, for example, will require a very sandy, very gritty soil
whilst any members of the ericaceae will require a very peaty soil rich in
humus and with not so much grit.
As a general rule, 50/50 soil and grit is a safe bet. If you need more info
on specific plants. let me know.
