This spring, I had a distressing situation with my La Reine Victoria
shrub rose. As the buds were forming, a bright green 1/4 inch long
wormy-looking bug crawled up the stem and ate through the heart of the
bud. They got lots of buds before I noticed them. I went to several
nurseries and none of the "experts" could identify the bug specifically,
and just recommended a generic bug spray that I feared would kill a lot
of other things too. Instead, I "hand picked".
I would like to know exactly what this creature was and the best method
to erradicate. The bugs are gone now, so I assume they have matured
into some kind of winged insect (moth?) Is this some creature that
lives and/or breeds in the soil?
Any ideas? I am in Cda Zone 6 / USDA Zone 5. TIA.
