Hello, this is my first posting. I live in zone 8b, southern Louisiana.
I've often seen the kind of destruction you describe; fortunately, it
doesn't happen frequently enough for me to have to take any drastic action
(but my definition of frequency may not be the same as yours : ) I really
believe the culprit is a grasshopper, but that's just a guess. It could
also be a caterpillar. This is the time of year when these insects are a
real problem. Whatever it is, it sure has some pretty formative chewing
capabilities!
I've not had much luck with systemic sprays, like Ortene, which is fine
since I don't like using the stuff anyway, and insects, though they're
definitely around, don't pose as much of a threat to my roses as the
dreaded black spot.
If you're an organic gardener, you might want to try BT. If you feel it's
necessary to use something more potent, I'd try something specifically
formulated for caterpillars and grasshoppers. There's something on the
market, but darned if I can recall the name right now. You might even call
your local extension office and ask what they recommend.
Good luck!
Patty
