I was horrified when I heard of these pest eating Joanie's roses to sticks.
Appears they are more common East of the Mississippi. Control methods have
been: handpicking, milky spore (not sure what that is) neem, nematodes and
pyrethrins.
In the newer "National Gardening" magazine (August 1999-page 27) research
shows that these nasty beetles Love geraniums (Pelargonium). Not only do
they love them, but they are intoxicated by geraniums, even though "this
meal caused paralysis for up to 24 hours, and DEATH in as many as a third of
the population." This effect is significantly stronger in plants grown in
the full sun and bloom color has no effect. WOW....
How about interplanting your roses with geraniums. AND if you do so, David
Held and Daniel Potter of the University of Kentucky would like to hear
about your experience.
