Hi, Val:

I'm with you. I've had mostly rugosas and they've been wonderful tho some are
not the most elegant looking creatures in the beds. Wish I hadn't fallen head
over heels for 'All That Jazz'...rats. I'm going take your advice and that of
others too, and toss 'em. I'll not succumb to the chemical route. All I've
ever used is aged horse manure to amend and fertilize the clay soil we have
and it's served me well. Well, onto Gruss an Aachen...sounds pretty.
Experimented with some 2 foot mini's last summer and they bloomed
tremendously. I understand many, if not most, are own-root and tend to be
very hardy in the north...now, that gets my attention.

Thanks, Val...

Joanie
