I've been receiving messages but have never sent one! I live in New Zealand
and at the moment my roses are at their best - despite the heat. We've been
lucky with the rainfall as we live in the hills above Auckland which is
actually the water catchment area for the city. During Spring we weren't so
lucky as several of my newer roses suffered badly in the wettest spring in
memory here.
I run a garden site which has focussed rather largely on roses -
particularly Old Fashioned roses. A few days ago I received a rose as a
birthday gift from a grower that has provided me with great articles and
information about 'Classic' roses (his terminology). It must get confusing
for new rose growers - Heirloom roses, old-fashioned roses, classic roses
and OGR (Old Garden Roses)!!!
Anyway the rose I was given is called the Chestnut rose or Rosa Roxburghii.
I read somewhere that it grows 6 feet by 6 feet. Can anyone who has grown
this rose tell me if it really will get that big. I haven't planted it yet
and will have quite a struggle to find space where it will get some sun if
it grows that large!!!
