I did about the same thing. I received a piece of rose from a well
established rose that I beleive to be a F.J. Grootendorst. It came
with a large knob looking root, ( about 2x7) with a few small roots.
I have taken peices from roses and I usually get a good amout of
root from it. I desided to plant it as it was in amended soil. I
trimmed the rose to almost half it's size. (Now 2 feet. It is not
a climber mind you.) This was in Mid-December. It sat still till early
this month as I now see leavelets. I too, hope it can carry on.

I plan to give it B-12 for root growth,(now) and put off the regular
fertilzing, that can promote top growth too soon for so little roots.

I too am interested in wisdom of others on the List on this subject.
Anyone.!
