Some people on some of the other gardening lists might recall Mary
Weaver <mcweaver@usit.net> soliciting comments about disease-resistant
roses for a book she was writing. The book she was working on is out
and I got a copy a few days ago.
If you are interested in growing roses that don't have to be sprayed
within an inch of their lives to survive you might want to take a look
at Mary's book. What I particularly liked is that all categories of
roses are covered including modern roses. There are descriptions of 100
inherently healthy roses (most have pictures) and a few more roses
listed without descriptions or pictures.
Both chemical and organic information is included about rose care,
pests and diseases. There is also a list of sources for rose bushes and
supplies in the appendix.
I've only taken a few tentative steps in growing roses so I don't know
if someone with more experience would find the book useful.
Book info:
Burpee Basics: Roses, A Growing Guide for Easy, Colorful Gardens
Mary C. Weaver
Macmillan, 1998
ISBN0-02-862636-2
I got my copy at Amazon.com for around $10. I would think other sources
that normally carry gardening books would have it as well.
