I was thinking about this current thread about tying roses to street signs.
I'm assuming that those of you that do this cleared it first with the
city/town officials. As you may not know (at least here in my city), the
government owns about 12" of the land between the street and your house.
While you may do the upkeep in the form of cutting the grass for example,
the city has the right to do what they want on that easement, including
digging it up to do any repairs if necessary or using a weed-wacker or
pruning shears to make the right of way more visible. Are you ready for
the possibility that a cherished rose may be uprooted or cut back? They
try not to disturb exisiting trees/plants, but just this year the city
replaced the pipes on our street and guess what... the easements were dug
up in spots and the sod reseeded. Ugly red clay mounds everywhere just
when the homeowners had sown grass seed. And I've also seen some serious
chopping of shrubbery when people have complained that they couldn't see
around it to look at traffic.

I hate to play devil's advocate, but it is something everyone should think
about before investing a lot of money. I'm sure the people have such a
wonderful display in place knows that their work won't be disturbed in
their neighborhood.
