I'm a new member, like Gail, and look forward to learning from you all.
I certainly second Carleen's recommendation of Liz Druitt's book The Organic
Rose Garden (ISBN 0-87833-906-X), which is informative, useful, and FUNNY!
From Druitt I got onto polyanthas, which I had always avoided thinking they
would look dinky, but which are ideal for my humid, hot Washington, D.C.,
climate. Read her entry on Marie Pavie for laughing out loud (and then plant
it as she recommends).
I have an Abraham Darby, and it has a little black spot, but I have him
growing on a wooden fence as a climber. I suspect if I had it in better air
circulation I would have no black spot. I haven't had the trouble that Val
reports from Kentucky (and no one in D.C. will ever admit ANYWHERE is more
humid than here, even if it is).
