disease-resistant roses

Dear list-members:

Some of you will recall that I've been researching and putting together a
list of disease-resistant rose cultivars. I realize all of the caveats
associated with such a list: it depends on what climate you're growing
roses in, what kind of season you're having, whether the plants are
healthy, where they're planted, and so on.

Bearing all that in mind, I've talked to numerous people by phone or
e-mail and studied the rose literature as well as what little scientific
research I could get my hands on. I've now come up with a list of just
over 100 cultivars, both old and new, that I believe to have
better-than-average disease resistance in most areas of the country,
assuming the plants are healthy and receiving correct cultural care.

Here, too, there are exceptions: for example, rugosas that are ironclad
everywhere except in rust-prone climates. Also--I make no assumption that
any given rose can be grown without spraying, although some roses in some
parts of the country can. Less spartan roses in challenging climates
(e.g., 50 inches or more of rain a year and long, warm, wet summers--a
perfect prescription for blackspot) will not fare as well.

I would love to get your feedback on the list. Some of you have helped me
build it with your previous suggestions. I can post the list if people
wish; it is quite long. Or I can e-mail it privately. I will e-mail it to
anyone who asks and post it to the list if people seem to want it posted.

Thanks in advance for your help.
