Heirloom Roses

Dear Susan Saxton,

<Another tip: About August they have a 1/2
<price sale!!! What's left is what is available, but
<I have managed to get many from my "wish list"
<this way!

I had bought over a dozen at their August sale in
96. As we were getting ready for the move, my mom
babysat them, But took such a liking to them that
she kept them. Lost most of the labels, but I hope
to re-identify them at bloom and either, talk her back
out of some or propagate some cuttings.

<Your garden's going to be gorgeous. I can't
<remember where you lived, but if you're
<interested, I'd love to have you visit mine and
<visit yours. I have about 65 mostly old roses. I
<love to see them "in person," it can really,
<change your mind one way or the other about a
<rose.

Hope to till in the 8 yards of mushrooom compost,
4 yards of sand, and lime for the new garden this
week-end, if the sunshines awhile. Have had this
garden floating in my mind for almost 2 years.

I'd be thrilled to see your garden. I would be there
in a heart beat, but will have to take a rain check,
as I have 10 ewes ready to lamb. (ones at it as we
speak) But I should be available by mid-April. 65
OLD roses, I can't wait. Have only seen so many
Old Roses together at Heirloom. I've been making
yearly visits since 92. Love that place, we make it
a family picnic. I live in Goble, almost an hour from
Portland on Hwy 30 towards Astoria. Do you live
in The Dallas area?

<Which ones did you buy? It "split" ..two rootings
<in the same pot >

I try to pick out "two rootings in the same pot" more
for the quicker, bushier rose. Several of these are two.

I bought:
Alba Maxima, Great Maidens Blush, Boule de' Neige,
Louise Odier, climbing Souvenir de la Malmaison,
Fantin-Latour, Ispahan, Botzaris, Autumn Damask-bifera,
Belle Isis, Jacques Cartier, Mme.William Paul, Abraham
Darby, Claire Rose, Constancy Spry, Cottage Rose,
Charmain, Gertrude Jekyll, Mary Rose, Redoute, St.Swithun,
The Countryman, William Shakespeare, Wife of Bath,
Winchester Cathedral, Mrs.Doreen Pike, and Russell's
Cottage Rose. They also gave me the 9 free orphans
that are healthy as can be.

With what does your garden grow? Roses that is?
Where do you live?
I'm willing to give cuttings someday.
Have you propagated much?

Perhaps I should have sent this privately.
Not sure if the list minds, not much traffic.
Wonder if they are "lacking the luster" for the rose?

Got to check out the sheep materity ward.

Sincerely,
Carleen
