Phillip,
The main thrust of the book is mixed borders done English style. Tony Lord
gives examples of seasonal gardens, different approaches to color combos,
etc. I like his style of writing because I feel like I've been let in on
some good secrets. What makes it all seem so real is how he describes the
time-consuming maintenance of these borders to get them picture-perfect.
Also there are a few stories of total flops -- total failure of a huge rose
garden, for example, due to poor soil preparation.
I'm not so picky about whether certain plants stand up straight, or
achieves just the right height or forced blooming. I'm interested more in
the plant combinations, how he achieves the lush look I crave, and how to
incorporate just the right roses for blooms in the spring and brilliant red
or orange hips come fall. Interestingly enough, there's not one hybrid tea
rose to be found in the book.
As I said, the photos are magnificent, the instructions/tips most useful,
and the ideas are truly inspirational if you like the English cottage
garden look.
