Carleen,
sorry to take so long in getting back to you. another list i am on has
buried me in email lately.
> What roses do you have?
i'm enamored with H. musks so i have 'Robin Hood' (2), 'Ballerina'
and 'Penelope'. 'Penelope' is in the center of my vegetable
garden. I have a double four-square vegie garden - 8'x8' beds
four on each side of center 4' wide path, then 4'x8' beds around the
perimeter - a picture would help here! i put climbing roses at
each of the three gates (the gates haven't been put in yet - gulp!) -
two 'Climbing America' and 'Climbing Cecil Brunner' (sp?).
I also mail ordered 'Rambling Rector' for the corner of the garage
(soon to be potting shed) that borders the vegie garden. 'Souvenier
de la Malmaison' in a big terra cotta pot, 'Hansa' in the corner of the
yard, 'Bonica' at the base of the street sign in the front yard, 'Blaze'
by the door to my shop along with 'Sir Thomas Lipton', and 'Mary
Rose' at the end of our test bed - all making for a rather eclectic
bunch. And some other give aways/throw aways that i can't
remember.
As you can see, i have mostly tucked them in where they seemed to fit.
but any new aquisitions will have to go into a planned bed/border.
i like your idea of having color schemes for each bed. that imposes
some limits and helps cut down on the number of choices you have
to make. That is what the four square garden layout did for my
vegetable garden. Permanant planting go into the beds around
the perimeter and each year i move stuff around in the 8 middle beds.
there are limited places for tall things so that kind of helps in the
planning stage. Once i decide where to put something big, then
the rest kind of falls into place. Do rose beds and roses in mixed
borders have the same sort of constraints?
